چکیده

We develop a methodology to measure the extent of globalisation using long time-series drawn from di¤erent sources. The novelty of this approach is that it provides a method to condense the information contained in numerous series that are highly correlated and trendy, and permits a consistent measurement of globalisation over long time periods (200 years). By applying our proposed methodology, it is possible to assess the relative incidence of the globalisation process at di¤erent levels of geographical aggregation (e.g. world or region). It can also be decomposed into globalisation’s main drivers. In addition, our methodology is consistent with the idea that globalisation is an integrated process. Last, our results provide broad support to globalisation’s historical evolution provided by O’Rourke (2002) and O’Rourke and Williamson (2000). JEL Codes:

19th Century Logic between Philosophy and Mathematics
